Scunthorpe-based Intake Transport, has filed a notice of intent to appoint administrators. The business is a family-led company offering general and heavy haulage as well as warehousing services. The intention to appoint administrators is aimed at preventing the business from heading into liquidation.
Established in January 1995, Intake Transport has built a solid reputation over nearly three decades, specialising in the transportation of fabricated steel. Their fleet, which carries the company’s tagline “Built On Steel,” includes over 50 trucks and 100 trailers. It also features low loaders, step-frame, and rear-steer trailers with capacities ranging from 56 tonnes to 90 tonnes.
Led by brothers and co-directors John and Richard Burgin, the company operates out of its headquarters in Scunthorpe, with additional depots located in Sheffield, West Lothian, and South Wales. Intake Transport holds FORS Silver accreditation, demonstrating its commitment to maintaining high safety, efficiency, and environmental standards. Over the years, the company has contributed to major infrastructure projects, such as the Edinburgh Airport expansion. It has also worked on projects like the new Hearts of Midlothian FC stadium, and the Gravesend railway station refurbishment.
The industry is facing challenges as demand fluctuates and production costs rise. The current Labour government has pledged to invest £2.5 billion in revitalising the UK steel sector with further plans expected in Spring 2025. However, there is no clarity on this yet, and the upcoming budget may prove to be even more financially challenging for SMEs.
Intake Transport’s close ties to the struggling UK steel industry have placed the company under significant pressure. In June 2024, British Steel requested a £600 million government support package to fund the transition from blast furnaces to electric arc furnaces at its Scunthorpe and Teesside plants.
At the time of reporting (21 October), no official comment from Intake Transport was available. This move to appoint an administrator may offer a final lifeline for the company as it faces these mounting industry-wide pressures.
